How many words do you know?

ACTIVITY
For this activity you will need a shopping brochure, paper, scissors and some glue.

1. Look for these things in your shopping brochure. See how many things you find. Are there any other words you know? Which ones?

milk - water - wine- beer- coffee

eggs - fruit - vegetables - coffee

pasta - meat - fish - rice - legums

ham - cheese - cocoa - soda - ice cream -

tuna - washing powder - toothpaste - margarine - butter - bread - tomatoes- patatoes...

2. Classify the words in countable uncountable groups.
The same as in your language, some nouns can't be in the plural form.
Example: meat -  the meats*

These types of words are usually from the following groups.
  • Liquids: water, coffee, wine, milk...
  • Things we can buy by weight and cut it off a big piece: a kilo of meat, half a kilo of cheese...
  • Things that we buy in grain: sugar, flour, salt,...
ACTIVITY
Lets classify the words from your shopping brochure into two main groups, countable nouns and uncountable nouns.
Countable nouns will be in blue and uncountable nouns will be in red. Now write the words down on a small piece of paper and stick it on your brochure.

Quantity nounsWhen we go to the shops we say:

Can I have...?

Can I have a kg (kilo) of apples, please?
Can I have a bottle of milk?

I would like...
I would lika two kilos of cheese.
I would like two oranges.

Why are there words in red?
Why are there words in blue?

ACTIVITY
Look at the food noun page and decide how to ask for the products you have found in your shopping brochure.
